Stafford's Crow's Nest Receives Scenic Viewshed Award
November 13
Scenic Virginia, Inc. recently selected the Crow’s Nest Area Preserve in Stafford County as the recipient of its 2009 Scenic Viewshed Preservation Award.
The award honors the efforts of local, federal and state officials, in partnership with citizens and environmental groups to preserve 3,000 acres on the Crow’s Nest. The area is the state’s 54th natural area preserve, encompassing 750 acres of tidal and non-tidal wetlands; 2,200 acres of hardwood forest; wildlife habitats for rare and endangered birds, animals and fish; and 21 miles of stream, plant and wetland buffers.
“Many people, including former and present Board members, worked hard to preserve Crow’s Nest and they all deserve this honor,” said George Schwartz, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. “They saved the area from development, and have provided Stafford’s residents and visitors a unique setting in which to enjoy rare animals and plants that can only be found in this beautiful location.”
Scenic Virginia, Inc. is a statewide organization dedicated to the preservation, protection and enhancement of Virginia’s scenic beauty and community character. For the past 11 years, it has promoted initiatives to enhance landscapes, increase tourism and economic development, and encourage preservation of historical and cultural resources.
The future use of the Crow’s Nest property will be consistent with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Natural Area Preserve System and will include public access for self-guided nature hikes, wildlife observation posts, canoe launches, fishing and other similar passive activities.
