Stafford County government is comprised of a governing body, the Board of Supervisors, and 5 independently elected Constitutional Officers. In Virginia this governmental structure is commonly referred to as the traditional form of government.
The concept of Constitutional Officers grew out of the Jeffersonian belief that government functions best when it is closest to the people and that those who hold powerful government positions should be held directly accountable to the voters. These positions date back to the 1700’s and are specifically established in the Constitution of Virginia.
